How We Protect Your Stories
Your stories are deeply personal. Here is exactly how we keep them safe — in plain language, no legal jargon.
Where your data lives
Everything you share with Memoira — your stories, photos, recordings — is stored on servers in Europe (France and Germany). Your data never leaves Europe for storage. We use Neon (PostgreSQL database, Frankfurt), Cloudflare R2 (file storage, EU), and Upstash Redis (cache, Frankfurt). You can see the full list of services on our subprocessors page.
Who can see your stories
Only you decide who sees your stories. By default, everything is private — visible only to you. You can invite specific people to your circle (as contributors or readers), or make a story public. No one at Memoira reads your stories. There is no algorithm recommending your private content to strangers. Your circle, your rules.
What AI does with your words
Guida (our AI interviewer) reads your conversation to respond thoughtfully and generate chapters. Your words are sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing, then immediately discarded — Anthropic does not store your conversations, does not use them to train AI models, and has zero data retention on API requests. The same applies to voice transcription (Deepgram) and text-to-speech (Google Cloud). Your words flow through, they are never kept.
Contacts and your circle
Adding someone as a contact requires their acceptance — no one can add themselves to your circle without your consent. You control who can contribute memories, who can read, and who has no access at all. You can remove anyone at any time. You can also mark trusted contacts as secret keepers, giving them access to chapters you have marked as private.
Encryption and security
All data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS). Your password is hashed with bcrypt and never stored in plain text. We use secure session tokens, rate limiting on login attempts, and alert you by email if someone changes your password. We do not offer end-to-end encryption — we hold the keys so we can generate chapters and process your interviews.
Deleting everything
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. When you do, we schedule a 30-day grace period (in case you change your mind), then permanently delete everything: your profile, stories, chapters, photos, recordings, and all associated data. Nothing is kept. Any contributions you made to someone else's story are anonymised, not deleted — the story owner keeps their memories.
