Marguerite, you mentioned that the summer of 62 was special. What made that summer so memorable?
Oh, that summer... yes, it was 62. We lived in this little house on Elm Street, nothing special, you know? But my mother, she'd be up before everyone, coffee already made. And my brothers, always arguing over the radio. But the garden out back, oh my. To us kids, it was enormous.
The garden sounds wonderful. What do you remember about spending time there?
Well, the garden was... it was our whole world really. My mother grew tomatoes, green beans, sunflowers taller than me. The neighbourhood kids would come play and we'd stay out until dark. Nobody called us in for dinner, we just knew when the streetlights came on it was time. I can still smell the earth after the rain.
That image of the streetlights coming on is beautiful. It sounds like the neighbourhood was very close-knit. Were those kids still around when you grew up?
Some of them, yes. The Kowalski boys moved away in 65 I think. But Jenny, Jenny Moreau, two doors down, she became my best friend for life. We were each other's bridesmaids. She passed three years ago now. Sixty years of friendship, can you imagine? She wasn't afraid of anything. She's the one who climbed the oak tree in our garden when the boys wouldn't. She taught me to ride a bike, not my brothers. Every brave thing I ever did, Jenny said "go on, do it" first.
Sixty years, what a gift. What's one thing you'd want your grandchildren to know about Jenny?

Why Memoira exists
Every life has stories worth keeping. Most of them disappear because no one asked in time.
Memoira exists so those stories don't get lost. Not with a therapist. Not with an empty journal. With someone who listens, gently, patiently, and turns your voice into text you can keep, share, or leave for later.
